Ix, 136, [20] pp. , 5 full page lithographic plates with facing page text. In-text illustrations. 1st edition of Meek and Haydens initial work on the invertebrates from the earliest strata of the upper Missouri. The whole work, encompassing specimens from the Cretaceous and Tertiary, was intended to be published as a 3 part series under the auspices of the Smithsonian. The latter two parts, however, were not published until 1876 as Vol 9 of the USGS Survey of the Territories. The standard work of classification of the invertebrates of the Upper Missouri by Halls acolyte, Meek and his longtime partner and intrepid explorer, Hayden. A fresh, neat example on bright, supple page stock. Bound in a modern casing of beige linen boards and brown linen backstrip. Lettered paper title label mounted to spine. Contents are about Fine. Handsome modern binding. This early work by Hayden & Meek is only very infrequently seen in the market.
