About This Item
New York: The Viking Press, 1947 This is the 6th printing (1966) of the 1947 original published by Viking. This is the best ex-library copy of any book ever! There are no labels or markings on the boards or the dust jacket, and inside there are just four black felt marks and the remnants of a card pocket on the rear end paper. It was a 1948 Newbery Honor Book, and the author, a French national who later emigrated to America, started the first children's library in France. Admirably illustrated in brown tones by George Schreiber, it is a charming story of a young boy who is befriended by two American soldiers just after the second world war. Small quarto, 63pp.
