London: Faber & Faber, 1947. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 20.5 × 13.5cm, 302pp. Map endpapers. From the dustwrapper, "When those grand schoolboy characters, Sneezer and Bard, and their lively friend Jennifer decided to take an interest in old buildings while on holiday, they little knew what things historic and prehistoric could hold in store for them. They found adventure and something more than that. The mystery of the sacred Relic and the mystery of the stolen statue of Pan both led to the Long Barrow and, in the end, to a perilous encounter in the dark." The author, Geoffrey Hoyland, was headmaster at The Downs School in Malvern, where he taught alongside W H Auden who was to dedicate his poem, "A Summer Night" to Hoyland. Condition: The book itself is in very good condition for age with some tanning to the pages but generally clean and with secure binding. The dustwrapper has some foxing and tanning and suffers small areas of loss to the spine ends. Small taped repair to the bottom corner of the rear panel. However, it has not been price-clipped and is now within a protective sleeve.. First Edition. Hardback. Good Plus/Good.
