Black ink ownership of Jermyn Moorsom (1881-1951) to fly-leaf. Large Times Book Club label to rear pastedown. Spotting and toning to edges. Spotting also to first and final few leaves. Light rubbing and bumping to cloth. Spine perhaps very slightly toned, but not sunned, and far better than usual. Very good. Moorsom and Forster were both members of 'Darling's Set' at King's College, Cambridge, named after Malcolm Darling (1880-1969). Forster notably stayed with Darling and his wife Jessica at Dewas in India during his tour of 1912-13, which eventually led to 'A Passage to India.' He later wrote about the continuing significance of his old King's friends in a letter to Darling dated 15th September 1924: 'King's stands for personal relationships and these still seem to me the most real things on the surface of the earth, but I have acquired a feeling that people must go away from each other (spiritually) every now and then, and improve themselves if the relationship is to develop or even endure. A Passage to India describes such a going away - preparatory to the next advance, which I am not capable of describing... The 'King's' view over-simplified people: that I think was its defect. With 42 wood engraved plates by Benett, including a frontispiece. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles and black, brown and white decoration to spine and upper. All edges gilt; cream endpapers. Two plates tipped back in, with a little rubbing to edges. Some very minor occasional marks to leaves, and a gentle tobacco scent. Heavy rubbing to cloth, with some colour lost to both boards, and toning to spine. Very good. A thrilling tale of round the world air travel under the the wing of Robur the master engineer, all the more remarkable for the fact that it was written a good fourteen years before the Wright brothers first got their ideas off the ground. First published in French in 1886, and the rarest mid-period Verne in English.
