About This Item

Phoenix, AZ; São Paulo: Phoenix Art Museum; São Paulo : Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, 2017. b/w and color plates, cat., bibliographical references, color pict. fldg. wrps. Published on the occasion of the exhibition held first at Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, Arizona, September 1-December 31, 2017 and after at the MAM in São Paulofrom January 22 to July 28, 2019. Curated by Vanessa Davidson (Phoenix Art Museum) and Cauê Alves (MAM SP). The exhibition presents seventy iconic works from the MAM collection showing that "Brazilianness" is not an essential trait of Brazilian art and that the diversity of styles, themes and media gives the art produced in the country an international and cosmopolitan character. The title of the exhibition refers to the relations between the past and the future, constructed through works of art rooted in a present characterized by unprecedented diversity and the constant exchange of ideas on an international scale. Includes painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video and performance, as panorama of the practice of artists recognized as pioneers of their generation. The show features works by seminal artists, as well as several historical anchors from the 1970s that illustrate continuities and conceptual ruptures between past and present. Five sections structure the exhibition with porous boundaries, allowing visitors to create their own paths.
