The Pastures of Heaven by Steinbeck, John - 1932

New York: Brewer, Warren & Putnam / Robert O. Ballou, 1932. First edition. second issue. Hardcover. Very Good/Fine. One of perhaps only a handful of copies of the rare first edition, second issue. In more than twenty years of collecting, I have not seen another. According to Phil Ralls' Steinbect Firsts catalogue (see John Steinbeck : A Descriptive Catalogue of the Holmes Collection): the existence of the second issue was known only from the single copy in the Goldstone collection, now held by the University of Texas in Austin. Goldstone & Payne A2b, with the Brewer, Warren & Putnam integral title page, but with Robert Ballou on the spine of the book. The book cloth is faded at the spine, former owner name in pencil, else book is very good. Dust jacket is fine and bright, with only minor edge wear. Though it is not noted in Goldstone & Payne, the dust jacket for A2b is taller and trimmed differently than the third issue (see picture here showing both. Note how trimmed differently top and bottom). Though this original jacket is supplied to this book, it matches the size and trim of the jacket on the Goldstone copy. Ironically, the Goldstone copy of this book is bright and fine but in rather crudely restored jacket; this copy is faded, yet in a remarkably bright and lovely jacket.
