Description:
(Pretoria: J L van Schaik, 1939). Afrikaanse bewerking deur A. E. Carinus-Holtzhausen. 214 x 141 mm; card wrappers; pp. 78. Wrappers very darkened, and yapp edges worn; earlier owner's hand-stamp to inside of upper cover and title page. Good condition. Afrikaans text. Uncommon. "Hierdie toneelstuk is 'n poging om insidente in die lewe van Paul Kruger, die edele leidsman van 'n heldhaftige volk, in dramatiese vorm uit te beeld. Ons het gebruik gemaak van die voorreg wat die dramaturg geniet om insidente na mekaar toe te skuif, en hier en daar 'n paar ondergeskikte afwykings van die ware feite te maak." - Voorwoord. "My great astonishment was to get a really delightful letter from Mr. Eric Louw, then Minister Plenipotentiary in Paris, who assured me that 'Oom Paul' [in her biography 'The Pace of the Ox'] had been well and justly portrayed, and he was glad that such a picture had been given to the outside world." - Marjorie Juta: Boundless Privilege, p. 106 .

(London: Antiquarian Booksellers' Association, 1962). First edition. ABA exhibitor list for book fair at the National Book League in London held June 19-23, 1962. Pale gray stapled paperwraps; 3.5 x 8.25"; 9 pages. Three-page introduction by Durrell. "I once heard a loudly-dressed man in a bookshop say: 'I want four yards of books please. They must be red and not taller than eight inches.' This happened in 1932 but I can still remember the expression on the faces of the other customers. They stared in horror at this airy, unconcerned cad, who contented himself by swinging a cane and adding inconsequentially: 'It's for my yacht'." Light creasing to one corner otherwise fine. From the collection of the illustrator Claude Smith with his penciled signature.Typed note from the famous Charing Cross Road booksellers Harold Mortlake & Co. ("We do not know if you are interested in Lawrence Durrell ..."). IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN LAWRENCE DURRELL
