About This Item

New York: McGraw-Hill Book Co., 1972. 1st Edition . Cloth. Good/Good. 8vo. 215 pp. First printing, first trade edition of this classic Lesbian novel, after a limited edition issued privately in 1969 under the title "A Place for Us." Spine cocked, lettering on spine rubbed; previous owner's name stamped on all three edges, most pronounced on bottom edge but happily less so on top and fore-edges; and her name, date and short notation neatly written on title page. Jacket creased at spine, bumped and worn at edges, and rubbed at folds, front fore-edge most heavily, with a couple of scuffs, chips at top and bottom.

Synopsis

Patience and Sarah is a 1969 historical fiction novel with strong lesbian themes by Alma Routsong, using the pen name Isabel Miller. It was originally self-published under the title A Place For Us and eventually found a publisher as Patience and Sarah in 1971. Routsong's novel is based on a real-life painter named Mary Ann Willson who lived with her companion Miss Brundage as a "farmerette" in the early 19th century in Greene County, New York.
