Perhaps the most striking aspect of Paul Cezanne: The Basel Sketchbooks, a small exhibition that was on view at the Museum of Modern Art, is that little was learned about this extraordinary artist's works on canvas. Or rather, we learn about them only obliquely. It is not the early modernist landscape and still-life painter one encounters here, but another, less familiar, Cezanne. This exhibition includeded 114 works, selected by Lawrence Gowing and Bernice Rose from the collection of the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland. Many of them are stunning. Cezanne's entire creative life is represented, from the theatrical, romantic drawings he executed in his youth to the lyric, curvaceous renderings of sculptures and paintings at the Louvre that Cezanne completed near the end of his career.
