Librairie Plon, Paris, 1888. 1 leaf + front wrapper + Half-title + TP + [i] xi + 1 275 + rear wrapper + wrapper spine + 1 leaf. 12mo. First French Edition. SIGNED/INSCRIBED by Translator.
First edition in French, by Victor Derély (18401904), who also translated Crime and Punishment (1884), The Possessed (1886), and The Idiot (1887). The first English translation was not published until 1894. Boutchik 334 (misdating it 1883).
CONDITION: Very good or better. Some pencil side-ruling and underlining; uncut in quarter morocco, spine lightly sunned, with the original printed wrappers (darkened) bound in; TEG; inscribed by the translator on the half-title to the journalist and poet, Edmond Lepelletier (18461913).
