Placed in the supreme council in 1819, he was again appointed to that station when the usual term of holding it had expired. From January to August 1823 he acted as Governor-General of India. Bad health compelled him to embark for England in March 1825. But he died on the 4th of June in the 47th year of his age, and his remains were committed to the ocean." Images are of many important monuments, buildings, shrines, palaces, pagodas, landscapes, sculptures, and Chinese people.
Text is tight and very clean, photographic plates are pristine, beautiful original publisher's embroidered blue silk binding with slight rubbing and fading on the spine. Interior is Fine, binding is VG-.
"For a long time there has been a recognized need for an album on historic Peking that would embody a representative set of all the important monuments of the capital. The very fact that so many of the ancient landmarks-priceless in their age-old glory-are being torn from their foundations and ruthlessly destroyed, makes an album of this kind not only interesting as an art volume, but a work of immeasurable value to China and to the world, as an authentic record of picturesque Peking."
This copy was presented to the US Minister to China, John Van Antwerp MacMurray by the Chinese Minister for Foreigh Affairs, Dr Chengting T. Wang, on the front free endpaper. Probably a parting gift as the Minister left office. Originally called to the Bar in 1906, MacMurray pursued a career in the Foreigh Service and served in a number of Far Eastern postings before becoming Minister to China in 1925.
