London.: George Edwards.. 1743- 1751.. Hand colored copperplate engraving, plate size approximately 9 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches on sheet 11 1/2 x 9 inches. A few light foxed spots and toning to edges. Signed in the plate. With text sheet. Plate # 92 from George Edwards "A Natural History of Birds, Most of which have not been figured or described and others very little known..." published in London between 1743 and 1751. This plate, dated 1746 in the plate, features a gorgeous pelican on a mossy rock with coral and starfish. Edwards, a friend of Sir Hans Sloane and Mark Catesby, is a pivotal figure in ornithological history. .
