John Murray, London, 1832. First Edition. Hardcover (Half Leather). Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Godfrey Charles Mundy (1804-1860), soldier and author, was born on 10 March 1804. Mundy entered the army as an ensign in 1821, was commissioned lieutenant in 1823, captain 1826, major 1839, lieutenant-colonel 1845, and colonel 1854. In 1825-26 he was decorated while serving in India as aide-de-camp to Lord Combermere at the siege and storming of Bhurtpore. During the years 1827-9 Mundy made a journey of some 650 miles from Calcutta to the Upper Provinces of India during which he kept a manuscript journal, for his own amusement, detailing scenes & characters as they appeared, incidents as they occurred, and anecdotes as they were related to him. On returning to England he was persuaded to have these published in the present volumes which were illustrated by engravings which he selected being : "for the most part those bearing on Indian sporting , as presenting more of a novelty to the English eye than the more hackneyed subjects of landscape." Half-leather with marbled boards & end-papers; binder's small label inside front covers; Vol. I - preface,glossary & contents to the front; illustrated by frontis. & eleven full-page plates with colour folding map to rear; Vol. II - contents to front; illustrated by frontis. & five full-page plates plus seven woodcuts in text; preface & glossary to front of vol. I; ribbon bookmark to vol. II; Size: Octavo (standard book size). 381 & 376 pages. 2-volume set (complete). Bindings tight, covers and spines fully intact. fairly heavy foxing to most of the plates - mainly the borders but in some impinging on the drawings - however the text pages & illustrations therein are free of foxing. Previous owner's signature in ink to title pages of both volumes & a later owner's name stamped to reverse of frontis. illust. in vol.I. & front free end-paper in vol.II.. Marbled edges in good condition. Gilt titles to black labels spine with five raised bands & gilt decorations. bumping & light wear to outer corners & edges; vertical crease to last page of vol.I; some scuffing to leather. illustrated by b/w. drawings.
