The mystery of the disappearance of the tiny,fifteen-foot PUFFIN,crewed by David Johnstone and John Hoare in their attempt to row the Atlantic, captured the world's headlines in October 1966 and there has since been much speculation about the reasons for the tragedy. When PUFFIN was found in mid-Atlantic,frogmen discovered in the upturned hull a 35,000 word journal in Johnstone's handwriting which gives a day-by-day account of the vicissitudes which he and Hoare had suffered.Graphically written,it depicts heroism of a high order and may come to be acknowledged as one of the most moving and vivid documents of personal experience and high endeavour ever written.'The Penance Way' is based on this material,on interviews with many of the people involved and on Johnstone's plans dictated before he left England. The last section offers a solution to the mystery of PUFFIN's lack of progress and misdirection.
