Pennsylvania, February 3, 1721. Single sheet, (3 ½ x 3 ¼ inches). Very fine Fraktur manuscript Valentine card with floral embellishments and depiction of a crane, in pen and red, black, and green ink and watercolor wash heightened with gum arabic. Provenance: The Dr. Frank H. Sommer III Trust. Doyle sale 13BP04, November 25, 2013, Lot 296. ORIGINAL FRAKTUR MANUSCRIPT VALENTINE. This beautifully lettered and decorated Valentine is cut in the shape of a heart, with a ten-line poem as well as the date "Anno 1721 Den 3 February," and a small figure of a crane at the bottom identified as "Ein Kranich" ("a crane"). Man soll nichts zum Lernen spahren / Felts schon schnoer in ersten Jahren / Ists dochleicht hernach und brin- get / Dass uns unsser Heil gelin- get." Fraktur work was used to decorate many different kinds of manuscripts and documents made by the mainly German-speaking communities of Pennsylvania. Fraktur is also the name of the specif-ic style of calligraphic lettering used on these documents, as here. It was a popular typeface in German-speaking parts of Europe from the mid-1500s until the 1940s. In 1683, upon William Penn's invitation, Mennonites from Krefeld, Germany, settled near Philadelphia. Others fol-lowed, coming from Germany, Switzerland, and Holland..

Description:
1860. Single leaf measuring 5 by 7 3/4 inches. A drawing of a young man and woman glancing shyly at each other, with their noses drawn in an angular fashion so as to point at each other. Below the figures is penned words "i cant [sic] stop long this time." A Feb. 25, 1861 inscription on the verso says "Valentine - Mr. Willis E. Marden." The young man wears simple clothing, a blue hat with a red band, a red shirt, and blue pants. His hair is long and curly. The woman's costume is more elaborate; she wears red shoes and a beaded necklace with her blue dress, and her uncovered hair is curled. The sheet of paper was once folded into quarters. Until postal rates became standardized, early valentines were typically folded, sealed, and hand-delivered to a beloved's doorstep. Pennsylvania-German or Dutch handmade valentines gained recognition for their fine workmanship, with detailed pinprick and cutout designs. This example is no less remarkable for its simplicity. Some faint discoloration, primarily to… Read More

1991. TUDOR, Tasha. ELEVEN AUTOGRAPH NOTES AND CARDS, PLUS A "FREE GIFT." The correspondence is addressed to Margaret Hensel, a garden designer, and was written in two short periods separated by nearly ten years that coincide with the initial publication of Ms Hensel's book, ENGLISH COTTAGE GARDENING FOR AMERICAN GARDENERS (NY: Norton 1992), for which Tasha Tudor wrote the preface, and the second edition in 2000. Tasha Tudor is a lively and enthusiastic correspondent even if, by her own admission, she is frequently in arrear. Content includes holiday greetings, gratitude for letters and gifts received, the publication of Margaret Hensel's book, and above all plants and gardening! Some notes are written on Tasha Tudor designed cards, while the rest are written on stationary. All but one card is in its addressed and post marked mailing envelope. The "free gift" is an envelope filled with sheets of unused cut-and-fold miniature valentines designed by Tasha Tudor. The collection described: 1. [Christmas… Read More

Description:
n.p.: Mossman, 1870. Very good. Single sheet, folded to approx. 3-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches, pierced in a lace pattern in the center and at the edges, and embossed with flowers and leaves. In the center is a young girl holding a circlet above her head, affixed to the card only by her foot, which is standing on a group of clouds, also attached only in sections, to give a three-dimensional effect. Beneath is a scroll reading, "If I lose you, I am lost". The scroll, girl and clouds are entirely hand-painted; flowers and leaves are hand-colored. With 'Mossman' lightly blind-embossed at the rear of the page. There is a tiny break in the fragile border paper lacework, image slightly dusty, else in very good condition and unused. Scarce.

Description:
Unbound. Very Good. Winsome collection of manuscript color illustrations, and light text, for part of a children's story. N.d., circa 1920s. The first card, or what is presumed to be so, bears the legend, "To My Valentine", with the name of "Ann Warren Stewart", written on a mailbox. Since Ann is a character in these drawings, we can assume she was not the author or illustrator but rather perhaps a recipient or dedicatee. The artwork is in the style, loosely, of Mabel Lucie Attwell or the Sally Dick and Jane readers. While it is simple, and perhaps even a touch naive, it is also very polished and almost certainly was executed by an adult. And so we see a small child fetching a giant heart-shaped valentine from a mailbox, a toddler stumbling off a chair, an older child trying to interest a baby in toys, and an older toddler climbing up and down a high chair. Each of these cards is fit for framing and hanging on a wall. Now disbound, there are three margin holes that… Read More
