About This Item

New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1922. Although the last copyright date in this volume is 1915, this Grosset & Dunlap reprint was actually published in early 1922 to correspond with the release of the motion picture version, staring Wesley Barry as Penrod. A photograph of Barry is used as a frontis illustration, with the original Gordon Grant frontis on the page preceding it. The book includes three other full-page photos from the film as well, in addition to all of Grant's delightful drawings and vignettes from the original edition. The book is in Very Good condition with light green cloth covers and black lettering on the front panel and spine. (Click on photo.) The binding is secure, and the text pages are clean and bright throughout. The book measures 5 1/4 by 7 3/4 inches and includes 345 pages, plus an 11-page illustrated, biographical sketch of the author by Asa Don Dickinson in the rear. Makes a nice collectible for Penrod fans.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. Illus. by Gordon Grant. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Synopsis

Penrod is a collection of comic sketches by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Booth Tarkington that was first published in 1914. The book follows the trials and misadventures of Penrod Schofield, an eleven-year-old boy growing up in the pre-World War I Midwestern United States, in a similar vein to Tom Sawyer. Penrod establishes the characters and the relationships between them who go on to appear in two further books, Penrod and Sam (1916) and Penrod Jashber (1929).
