About This Item
London: Max Parrish & Co Limited, 1948. Hardcover. 72p., text is set close in a smallish font (postwar economizing), illustrated with fullpage color plates as called for (on glazed alkaline stock, marginless) plus dust jacket drawing and 46 "decorations in line" by Peter Hoffer. Line vignettes x-ray add-ons like the bustle, how constructed. Nice book, with the book itself in very good condition: 9.5x6 inch grey cloth boards, just a little edgeworn, while the dust jacket is a mess but interesting (in two ruined pieces laid in). Sound, clean, unmarked. Imperfect turns perfect.. "stretching ahead from Waterloo lay a century of peaceful prosperity and moral refinements" (for the wealthier classes).. "the Perfect Lady had roots in commerce, war profits perhaps, things to be forgotten as she established a new social standard.." This new polish lasted "a century or so.. falling naturally into three phases, the Ascent, the Summit and the Decline..
