About This Item

New York, New York, U.S.A.: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1924. First Edition Later Printing . Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. Much beloved tale -- twice made into a movie-- of the events of Nov. 18, 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln traveled to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to commemorate those brave men who had given their lives in the just-ended Civil War, thought his speech was a failure, & was assured of its magnificence by a dying Confederate soldier drummer boy. In 47 pages, with a duotone frontispiece of Lincoln standing beside the beside of that dying soldier; artist attribution undecipherable. Orig. published in Scribners magazine in 1906, this is the FIRST EDITION in book form, but a later printing from 1924. Slim hardcover has brown paper-covered boards with an etching of Lincoln on the cover, with a one-eighth brown-cloth-wrapped spine. Condition is Near Fine: exceptionally clean & bright, binding strong & straight, pages creamy white with light, uniform tanning, heavier to endpapers. Former owner's stamp to ffep, else unmarked. In the scarce DJ, which is downgraded to Good due to writing on front cover & minor chipping at all corners, larger chip at head of spine & outer-upper corner of front cover; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover. Reviews

On Dec 20 2020, a reader said:
A perfect tribute to the modesty, kindness and pure humanity of Lincoln. Her story teaches us the strength of love over hate, of humility over arrogance, of kindness over winning. In this fiction comes a truth fir all to see: only the strong can be gentle; and only the great can endure personal hardship and strengthen others.
