About This Item
Cosmopoli: Kama Shastra Society of London and Benares, 1891. Burton's famous translation was first published in 1886 by the nonexistant "Kama Shastra Society" formed to evade the restrictions imposed by the Obscene Publications Act of 1857. He was working on a revision at the time of his death. In one of the great acts of literary vandalism, Lady Burton and here sister burned this along with many more of his journals and manuscripts. Penzer called this "a mad fit of wantonness" and who can disagree? This is a Very Good copy of the posthumous reprint brought out by his sometime collaborator Foster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot. Orange cloth binding with a black leatherette spine; gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; xiv, 236 pages. Bumped corners and a slight lean. While this is a solid copy, the orange covers show the dirt and smudges of the past century only too well.. Reprint Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
