First edition. First issue of text (except for p. 132, but this first issue point is only present in the very earliest copies). Octavo (8 x 5 1/4 inches; 205 x 133 mm). [i-vii]viii[ix]x-xii[xiii]xiv[xv-xvi] [1]2-624. Complete with forty inserted plates by Phiz including the frontispiece and the vignette title-page.
Handsomely rebound in late 19th-century half polished tan calf, over tan cloth boards. Spine elaborately stamped in gilt. Spine with red and blue morocco spine labels, lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt. Spine is slightly darkened. With the exception of the frontispiece, vignette title and plate facing page 544, all plates are very clean. Overall a very good copy.
