About This Item

Madrid: Antonio Marin, 1735. unbound. Vicente de la Fuente. View. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 8" x 22.5".

This is detailed perspective view of the "palace of the Inca kings" located north of Latacunga in the Province of Quito, Ecuador. Rendered with utmost detail and precision, the view includes a view of the palace on the left with hills and a stream on the right. Includes a key to the twelve markings on the map. According to Alexander von Humboldt, the hill of Bagel Callo is a natural mound which was formerly an island in the lake of the Incas Mulahalo and served in military defence. Some others believe it to be either a volcanic dome or even a tomb of the Inca. The ruins are of the house of Huayna Capac, the eleventh and penultimate ruler of the Inca and the successor to Tupac-Yupanqui (Topa Inca Yupanqui). This "casa del Inca" near Bagel, more commonly known as "San Agustin del Callo" is similar to the imperial residence built during the reigns of Tupac Yupanqui and Huayna Capac. The view is in good condition with minor stains in margins. This particular plan is from Part One, Volume Two, containing "Libro VI: Descripcion de la Provincia de Quito... - Indice de las materias y cosas notables contenidas en esta primera parte". Illustration by Vicente de la Fuente. Antonio de Ulloa (1716-1795) was a Spanish explorer, author, and politician considered one of the best European scientists of his time. He began his research in South America in concert with the French Academy of Sciences and traveled around the continent for ten years. His Relacion Historia del Viaje a la America Meridional, which he published with Jorge Juan y Sanctilla, provided a detailed geography and natural history of the continent.
