Illustrated by Engraved front cover shows laboratories 1-4 (from log cabin to the Hartman Sanitorium) recto, Astrological Chart verso, Rear has short calendar for two years 1906-07 and compliments of Ralph Gorham Lenox, Mass. Drugs, Medicines, Chemicals ad recto with Sanitorium ad verso; multiple text ports, cameos and line drawings internally. First edition. Stapled pamphlet with corner hanging hole and original string. 8vo 56x40cm. pp. 32. Good. Cover has three corners and rear edge chips with light toning. Internal newsprint page toning with short top tears but no text loss. The family moved to Columbus in 1880's and the Hartman patriarch manufactured Peruna, Manalin and Lacupia. With D. R. Summy, M. D. establish the alternative health spa Hartman Sanitorium which from the rear cover ad offered "Bathing, German Method; Manual Massage; Vibratory Treatment; Static, Galvanic and Faradic Electricity; X-rays and Radiotherapy; Physical Culture and Calisthenics; Medical Gymnastics, Swedish Movements, Rest Cure, Diet Cure". Contents include Jewish Calendar and weather verso and testimonials for the cure of catarrh of the...nose; head; eye and ear; throat and larynx; bronchial tubes; lungs; stomach; bowels; liver and kidneys; bladder; pelvis as well as, Epdemic, Systemic and Chronic Catarrh the scourge of Christendom. From Dan Baum's New Yorker 9/15/03 "Jake-Leg" article: "Peruna was a famous "Prohibition tonic," weighing in at around 18% grain alcohol. A nostrum known as "Jamaican ginger" was ordered to change its formula by Prohibition officials. To fool a chemical test some vendors added a toxic chemical, tricresyl phosphate, an organophosphate compound that produced organophosphate-induced delayed neuropathy, a chronic nerve damage syndrome similar to that caused by certain nerve agents. Unwary imbibers suffered a form of paralysis that came to be known as jake-leg..
