About This Item
Very good condition; spine and cover fragments are professionally restored (missing pieces filled using leafcaster machine); internally professionally restored small pieces of outer corners of several sheets, otherwise very clean. Possessory stamp on the title page "Iz biblioteki Vasily Arkad'evich Starikov" indicates, that this was book publisher's copy.
Extremely rare poetry collection, contains verses by three repressed authors – Boris Levites and Georgy Sumarokov, both of whom were shot, and Dmirty Usov condemned to 5 years in the camps.
Collection of poems includes first publications of ten young then unkown authors, most of whom would later become popular: future journalist Boris Levites (17 years ols), Pavel Linde, Nadezhda Pavlovich (19 years old; will gain popularity as a poet and literary critic), Dmitry Sidorov, Aleksey Starikov (22 years old; became known as orientalist, professor and docent), Vasily Starikov (started as promising poet, subsequently became a prominent specialist in military sports), Georgy Sumarokov (real name Filipp Vermelʹ; 16 years old; the youngest of the participants, famous future poet), Dmitry Usov (18 years old; later would be known as a poet and translator), N. Kharlamov, Maria Shkapskaya (23 years old; would become an outstanding Russian poet and journalist).
Participants of the current poetry collection got acquainted on the literary "Saturdays" organized by the monthly magazine "Mlechnyi put'" ("The Milky Way" published in Moscow in 1914-1916) where they were involved.
According to N. Pavlovich memoirs: "At the beginning of the war of 1914, I was on course of Sisters of Mercy in Riga, and then I worked in the infirmary In Moscow. This work reflected in my poems, published in a small poetry collection by beginning Moscow poets." Shkapskaya's poems published here are dedicated to Vasily Arkad'evich Starikov (collection publisher), also to N. Pavlovich and G. Sumarokov. Strong futurism influence show poems by D. Sidorov and G. Sumarokov, while D. Usov's verse tends to impressionism and symbolism.
Book's remarkable cover design with elements of avant-garde by R. Usov.
Extremely rare.
