Another name (also crossed out) is inscribed beneath the imprint; a small shelf number is written in the upper right corner. Pages are generally clean with occasional minor soiling and spotting. The covers show a rich patina to the leather and some external age/wear, concentrated at the extremities The boards are all attached, with surface cracking to some joints The text blocks are secure Bookplates of the Tortworth Rectory are affixed to the front pastedowns There is age toning on the pastedowns Insect damage is present in Volumes I and III, some of which has been capably repaired The interiors are generally clean and bright, with some scattered occasional toning and marks

The 1st edition was in English and published a year previously. The maps for the French edition were redrawn close copies of those in the English edition, and 4 of the maps in this copy have Robert Morden's name on them. The guide is a nice pocket size and was popular, however, some of the mapping is a little strange - the map of New York is notable in that Manhattan is shown as a peninsula not an island. This copy is missing the map of the Mid-Atlantic States - "Nouvelle Carte de la Pensylvanie Maryland, Virginie et Nouvelle Iarsey". The book is in contemporary full leather which is very worn with cracked hinges and a delaminating spine. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and seven plates, octavo, pp (12), 419, (60), 70, the hinge at the title page cracking but firm, slightly dusty internally but otherwise good, the pages a little waved throughout (not through damp, more as though they are unpressed), an early paper repair to the rear of the frontispiece, a corner torn from the front endpaper (removing the early signature sadly), contemporary full vellum, age-toned and a bit marked, the corners worn, an inked title on the spine, an armorial emblem of the City of Utrecht blind-stamped on each cover. Endpapers are heavily toned and there are some light pencil scrawls on REP's (child scribbling?). Some end papers have small tears and creases. Published by the long-time printing firm, Thomas Newcomb for another London printer, Joseph Hindmarsh, at the "Black Bull in Cornhill, near the Royal Exchange." This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
