The second volume was published posthumously by Smellie’s son Alexander.
William Smellie was an “Edinburgh printer, naturalist, and antiquary; printed and contributed to the first edition of ‘Encyclopedia Britannica,’ 1771; secretary of Newtonian Club, 1778, and of Scottish Antiquaries’ Society, 1793, (original member and keeper of natural history museum); noticed in Bruns’s ‘Crochallan Fencibles’; published and account of Scottish Antiquarian Society (1782-4), “The Philosophy of Natural History’ (1790-9), postumous lives of Lord Kames, Hume, Adam Smith, and J.
