About This Item
A photo album kept by a man named "Ray" while taking road trips in western America in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The album cover includes stickers which read "California / Idaho" but the travel includes a number of other western states. Ray captioned his photos with place names and the milage he traveled as well as images of families and friends he stayed with. A woman is repeatedly seen throughout the album which could have been a sweetheart and traveling companion but it is not specifically noted. Photos include family farms, friends posed in fields and by cars, and portrait photos taken of individuals. Ray took photos every place he stopped between the years 1937 and 1941 which included Oregon, Washington State, Canada, Utah, Montana, Missouri, California, Wyoming, Idaho, among others. Some photos show workers on various building sites such as dams and ships leading to the probability that all this travel had to do with looking for work for a young man in the 1930s. Ray has an eye for photography and catches people in interesting candids, such as one of a soldier dancing on a farm with his girlfriend captioned, "unexpected." Other photos include a guitar player named "Slim" and a young man with a gun "holding up" a friend. Later photos from California show men posed on motorcycles, a later photograph shows a man on a motorcycle in the snow with the caption, "snowbound." Ray also visited tourist attractions throughout his travels including Yosemite, Boulder Dam, Golden Gate Bridge, among others. Some postcards and ephemera from these places are includes throughout the album.
An extensive collection of travel photographs of the American west from the late 1930s.
