Hampton, Virginia: Unpublished, 1903. Original photograph (gelatin silver print) of Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute student George Hamlin, a member of the Chippewa tribe from the White Earth reservation in Minnesota. The lower right corner of the photo has the photographer's blindstamp, "Copyright 1903 by Leigh R. Miner." Miner taught at Hampton Institute for more than 40 years, was the most significant photographer in the Hampton Camera Club, and is perhaps best known for his iconic photographs illustrating books by Paul Laurence Dunbar. On the verso of the photo written in pencil is the name George Hamlin. Hamlin attended Hampton beginning in 1901 and graduated in 1903. He is reported to have died in 1915. The photograph is clean and bright with mounting residue at the corners on the verso.. First Edition. Paper. Collectible-Very Good+. Illus. by Leigh Richmond Miner. 9.25" By 5.75". Photo.
