New York & London: Harper & Brothers, Publishers/ Sampson Low, Son & Co, 1857. Sixth Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo. [1], xxiv, 25-360 pages. Illustrated with 14 plates (plate VI duplicated). Brown cloth hardcover with blind stamped borders on the covers and gilt illustration of a ship on the front board. Gilt lettered title on the spine. Light edge wear to cloth extremities head and base of spine and corners. Plates 1-4 are in text illustrations. Plates V-XIII are folding and located in back. Light scattered toning and foxing to contents. Old ink inscription of "Sherman O. Houghton San Jose Cal'a December 23d 1857" written on the yellow right front flyleaf and top of the title page. Oval book seller stamp of "Lowey & Bircham Booksellers Stationers San Francisco" also on the right front flyleaf. Ex Libris private library label of John Haskell Kemble located on the front paste down. A small square black stamp bottom of the rear paste down is from the Huntington Library (H.E.H. Dupl). A small printed pencil note bottom of the paste down reads "Huntington Library June 1958 $8.50". This later edition includes a 12 page addenda (pages 349-360) not included in earlier editions.
Sabin 46969. The first owner of this book, Sherman Houghton 1828-1914, was a California pioneer, attorney, Mexican War officer, former mayor of San Jose, Civil War officer on the staff of General Halleck and member of Congress from 1871-1875 (Source: Zoe Eldredge Beginnings of San Francisco).
The later owner of this copy, J. H. Kemble 1912-1990, was a maritime historian.
