Text block separated between publication page and half title; and between pp. xvi and xvii (contents page). Binding splitting between pp. 164/165. Missing lower 1/3 of spine. Many pages foxed.. Publishers black, gilt-embossed cloth with gilt-lettered spine. xvi +389 pp., followed by folding bw plates 5-13. Plates 1-4 are within the text. Two copies of plate 12 are bound in. Needs to be rebound. Plates (mostly maps) are all present and in mostly in very good condition. One of the earliest descriptions of the Gulf Stream (the river within the ocean). An extensive, informative study, with chapters on the influence of the GS upon climate; the atmosphere; sea breezes; sea dust; probable relation between magnetism and atmosphere circulation; sea currents; open sea in the Arctic Ocean; sea salts; the Equatorial cloud-ring; geological agency of the winds; ocean depths; Atlantic basin; winds; sea drift; storms; routes; force of trade winds of the southern hemisphere; Atlantic submarine telegraph; and more. Certainly sounds like fascinating reading, especially as the content was written from information of 1.5 centuries ago!
