[Chicago]: International Labor Defense, 1934. First edition. Stapled, illustrated wrappers (4 ½" x 6 ¾"), 16 pp, two crudely reproduced photographs, one illus. About Fine. Four copies in WorldCat, none others in commerce (May, 2019). A scarce booklet published by the International Labor Defense, the Communist Party's legal defense organization. This publication highlights the case of the Hillsboro 15, a group of workers charged with criminal syndicalism for organizing relief and unemployment efforts for the miners in Illinois. The pamphlet's evocative cover was illustrated by Jan Wittenber, a Canadian-born Jew, who was an active member of the Chicago John Reed Club and the model for Richard Wright's character, Jan Erlone, in Native Son. Wittenber also features in one of two photographs of the indicted workers.
