About This Item

Lyon, Mathieu Bonhomme, 1552. Illustrated by 106 emblems, probably from copper blocks rather than wood after the designs of Pierre Eskrich also known as Pierre Vase. Aneau had translated the Alciati emblems in 1549 and with the emblem book format in mind he composed the 'Picta poesis' verses chiefly to suits cuts found in Bonhomme's general stock. Nearly half the emblems are based on woodblocks designed to illustrate Ovid's Metamorphoses. The others were engraved for this book. One, showing the corruption of the magistrates, was removed in the following editions. Page 75 bears a very early illustration of tennis. Very fine copy, bound in France in the middle of 19th century. - -.
