About This Item
New York: Mahlon Day. , 1825. Wraps. Custom half morocco clamshell box 8vo. sized. Chapbook rests in recessed window. . Good. Printed and sold by Mahlon Day at The New Juvenile Bookstore, no. 376, Pearl Street. N.d., circa 1820s, when the New York City population grew to over 150,000, the number of inhabitants given in the opening sentence of the booklet. New York's status as a port and harbor is most prominent and a central aspect of the description of the city, as evidenced by the vignette of a ship on the wrap cover and title page, and most of the vignettes relate to the seafaring identity of the city, as does much of the text. Miniature chapbook, 32mo. 9 by 5.5 cm. 16 pp. Plus wraps. 13 woodcuts, including one on front cover, two on back, and a full page woodcut panorama of New York harbor from a distance. Chapbook itself is fairly heavily soiled and worn, but complete, easily readable, and a more than acceptable copy for what it is. Custom clamshell box is modern, attractive, mint or near mint.
