New York: Published by D. Appleton & Company, 1875. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Folios. iv, 488; iv, 460; iv, 491 pages. Hardcovers bound in original dark brown full morocco bindings with cover designs embossed in blind and in gilt. The bindings are rubbed and scuffed but sound with secure hinges. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Some foxing to the text, heavier at the front and rear of each volume. Each title page has some light pencil markings for the original directions for the binder. In Volume I, there is a little chip on the fore edge of the title page and on the following page. The interior text is a little toned but mostly clean. Contains text illustrations from wood engravings and steel plate engravings on thicker stock paper. Some of the steel engravings are foxed about the edges. Contains 63 steel plate engravings and numerous wood engravings. Overall a decent and serviceable set with sturdy bindings. Volume I is dated 1875; Volume II is 1878; Volume III is 1879.
