With Numerous Engravings on Steel and Wood from Original Drawings By Harry Fenn and J.D. Woodward. Volumes I and II complete. Very large two volumes: 13.5” x 10”x 2.25” each. Black leather with gilt blind stamped design to covers and spines, gilt titles. All edges gilt, marbled end papers. Gilt on interior edge of binding leather as well. The history, geography and archeology of eastern Mediterranean, with observations on Christian, Jewish and Muslim culture, sumptuously illustrated with many stunning steel and wood engravings, remarkably bright and clean. Volume I: Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Judaea, Nazareth and Gaililee. Volume II: Cairo, Sinai, Thebes, Memphis and Edfu.
Charles William Wilson (1836-1905) was a geographer and archaeologist in the British Army. During the 1860s, he conducted major surveys of Jerusalem and Sinai. The engravings on steel and wood are from original drawings by Harry Fenn and J. D. Woodward. They drew the engravings for this book on location, between 1877 and 1879. Text by eleven renowned British explorers and scholars covering Palestine, Egypt and Arabia. Bindings VG with minimal signs of exterior rubbing. Interior is Near Fine without defects and stains. Text and all illustrations in Fine Condition. No DJ as published. Raised bands on spine, dentelles, marbled endpages and all page edges gilt. Each volume has a steel engraved frontis and title page along with 18 other steel engravings and hundreds of wood engravings. Volume 2 also has two double page maps. The steel engravings in both volume are amazing and each has a tissue guard. Both volumes are in Near-Fine condition. The covers of each are clean and fresh looking with minor rubbing to the leather mainly along the spine edges. Bindings tight and square. Interior pages spotless. Exceptional copy of this beautifully produced set. Only flaw is an insect trail on the back of volume 1, location does not interfere with cover design.
