Nine unnumb. leaves letterpress text, 56 cardboard leaves with 117 finely handcoloured photogravures after photographs, of which 35 large panoramic views (c. 160 x 450 mm) and 82 views (c. 100 x 160 mm), some of the cardboard leaves with letterpress text on verso. Publisher's richly decorated cloth binding, front cover with an inlaid handcoloured view of the Victoria Falls, surrounded by an embossed and handcoloured view of African wildlife with a lion, an elephant, a crocodile, a giraff, and a hippo. All edges gilt. Rear paste-down with gilt stamped address: G. Budricks & Co., fine art publisher and manufacturer, P.O. Box 1018. Oblong folio (230 x 560 mm). Cover illustration rather rubbed, brass clasp missing.
Cf. Sidney Mendelssohn. South African Bibliography, with with several variable compositions of this album differing in bindings and in selections of photographs. "Several albums containing the same text and varied selections of plates were published by the firm G.B. & Co. George Budricks appears as a 'picture framer and dealer' in Juta's Directory of Cape Town from 1897 onwards, but only in 1910 is the firm listed at G. Budricks & Co., fine art publisher and manufacturer, P.O. Box 1018". Faint foxing here and there, mostly confined to white margins, first plate more severe and affecting image. A remarkable collection of beautifully handcoloured photogravures, with views of towns and cities and including a number of gold mines and other industrial sites. The photographer isn't mentioned neither on the images nor in the text.
