Description:
Ditchling: St. Dominic's Press, 1928. No statement of edition. Boards tinged with humidity acid burns, bookplate from the collection of Arthur Goldsmith Jr. front free endpaper with residual glue stains affecting prelims, another square cut-out illustration of a crooked hand on front pastedown.. Cover and title page illustrations by David Jones. 5.5 x 4 inches. Plain black cloth-backed illustrated paper-covered boards. 47 pp. This is an interesting early example of St. Dominic's Presswork founded by Eric Gill and Edward Johnston. Although seemingly a bare bones of a book, no colophon or author or illustrator mentioned, it has a rich feeling of connection to the period. Perhaps its simplicity reflects the social conscience of Hilary Douglas Clark Pepler, the press's founder, who was influenced at the time by the thought of Belloc and Chesterton. The religious content of the David Jones engravings reveals his commitment to the principles of the Catholic craftsmen of Ditchling.
