About This Item

London: Cresset Press, 1928. Hardcover. Orig. thick black boards lettered in gilt. Teg. Near fine in fine matching slipcase. 2 vols. Hughes-Stanton, Blair. 174 & 162 pages. Large 4to, 36 x 25 cm, ten full-page wood-engraved plates: six by Blair Hughes-Stanton, and four by Gertrude Hermes. Printed by the Shakespeare Head Press under the direction of Bernard Newdigate. As Roderick Cave noted [see: THE PRIVATE PRESS, p.183], "As Colin Franklin has so well put it in a phrase in which he linked Morris, Cobden-Sanderson, Hornby, and Newdigate, the books appear as if the literary works were privately digested as well as printed, and presented in the form proper to them." Printed on Batchelor's Kelmscott hand-made paper in 18 pt. Cloister, in a Limited edition, copy 31 of 195. The text for Vol.I from the 11th edition, published 1688, which represents Bunyan's final revision; Vol.II taken from the 2nd edition, published 1687. Slight fade to backstrips.
