About This Item

Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Co., Inc, 1943. First Edition [So Stated]. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo., green cloth, pp. 251, black & white photographs. -- Contains excellent Forest Service and other photos, including one of virgin timber of the lakes states area. -- Binding some slanted at the top. -- Overall Condition. "Early days of the forestry service, from 1900 on, and of hazardous, thankless work for which one man and woman made many sacrifices. Hugh and his wife start their pioneering way of life in the Great Lakes country, then move on to Colorado where Hugh sets up an experimental station. After continual fights with his less far-seeing superiors, he resigns from the service for a time, but is unhappy until he is back again, though rigorous conditions had cost them the lives of two children. Montana, the Rocky Mountains, and changes in the service through the years provide the elements of a life-long struggle for a vocation."--Kirkus.
