[7.75x5.25in] xv, 404 pp., frontispiece of Newton, 120 illustrations in text, index; Red cloth covers with stamped gilt lettering on front and spine, gilt stamped illustration on front of Newtonian telescope and fairies over decorative black ink design with similar gilt and black illustrations on spine, seal of Emanuel School stamped in gilt on rear cover. Minor shelf wear to covers edges and corners with some rubbing and small dents, light soiling to covers and fading to spine and back cover, award book plate on front end paper to H. A. Harris for Science. This is a collection of 18 lectures, revised and updated, on Astronomy and the discoverers. The lectures are about the theories and discoveries of Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Kepler, Galileo, Descartes, Newton, Roemer/Bradley, Lagrange/Laplace, Herschel (William and Caroline), Bessel, and other discoveries. They are still relevant and informative today with extensive illustrations on how the solar system and beyond was discovered and works.

The Emanuel School, was part of a larger effort to provide a Hospital and Almshouse in Westminister. The effort was funded by Anne, Lady Dacre (cousin to the Queen) in 1594 and chartered by Queen Elizabeth I 1601. The formal school education was started in 1736 for both boys and girls.
