Gift inscription on half title page, small poem clipping affixed to dedication page. The author was second officer of the 'Morning', the ship sent out by the Royal Geographical Society in 1904 to relieve Scott's first Antarctic expedition. In 1909 he was selected by Scott himself as second-in-command of his second expedition and as captain of the 'Terra Nova,' accompanying Scott in January 1912 to within 150 miles of the Pole before he turned back due to illness. Evans was also a naval hero during World War I and later commanded the Australian fleet. Frontispiece, pictorial endpapers and colorful jacket illustration by Manning deV. Lee. An oddly uncommon title and quite rare in Dust Jacket
