Glasgow: West End School of Cookery, 1878. 22cm, two parts 31p + 31p bound head-to-toe in cloth-covered flex boards gilt stamped "P. Cookery" and "S. Cookery"; the West End School of Cookery was founded in 1878. The founder was Margaret Black (1830-1903), who had also been an instructress at the Glasgow School of Cookery. She was a teacher of cookery and published many books on the subject of domestic science in her time." This present work has two parts: Plain Cookery: 59 recipes (unnumbered) plus 7 Sick-Room recipes; Superior Cookery: 64 recipes, all printed one side only and with some additional recipes on the verso page sides in a fine period hand. No title pages or publisher's imprint apart from the running footer reading: "Mrs. Black, West End School of Cookery, Glasgow", no date, but we surmise this to be an early printing based on bibliographical citations at UofC Davis.. hardcover.
