New York: Random House, 1965. Signed on the front free endpaper, and inscribed by the author: To Bill and Biddle,Congratulations to you both, and best regards, Peter (Matthiessen) March 12 1984. Laid in is a Postcard addressed to Biddle dated 1982. The message reads: Dear Bill I just can't get free this winter or spring (can't put this book to death) - Please give me a rain check, or snow check, even for next winter. Best Peter M. (the word for and the M in the signature have smeared, else near fine Postcard. First edition / First printing. Black cloth spine, tan cloth boards. Near fine, with slight spot to the bottom right of the rear board near the spine. Near fine dust jacket with a couple closed tears with no loss. Overall, a much nicer copy than what one generally encounters. Bill Biddle was a naturalist and teacher. At the time the postcard was sent, Biddle ran the Outing and Visiting Author programs at Holderness School in Plymouth, NH. By the time this book was inscribed, he had relocated to the Northwest. The book that Matthiessen can't "put to death" is probably In the Spirit of Crazy Horse, which was published in 1983.
