About This Item

Chicago, Ill: Playboy Enterprises, Inc, 1976. Volume 23, No. 11. Magazine. Near fine. Signed by Jimmy Carter, the infamous Playboy Magazine interview with Robert Scheer from November 1976, which threatened to derail his 1976 election.. Octavo, 259pp. Illustrated wraps, bound with staple at spine. Light shelf wear to covers, solid binding. Signed on the front cover by Jimmy Carter, which he often refused to do. "I've looked on a lot of women with lust. I've committed adultery in my heart many times." - Jimmy Carter in this edition of Playboy Magazine from 1976. Leading up to the 1976 presidential election, many Carter advisors worried the candidate looked too pious. They believed that a candid Playboy interview would humanize him and "take care of his religious problem" with his democratic base. Reflecting on the public outcry more than 30 years later, Carter believed that it cost him a substantial lead in the election, but stood by his words and their meaning.
