About This Item
London: C.E. Mudie, 1844. First English Edition (published months earlier in the U.S.). Publisher’s cloth; minor ink stains; very good or slightly better. Inscribed on the front free endpaper, “To Mrs James with kind regards/ T. Carlyle /London, 1844.” To a near certainty, the recipient of this volume was Mrs. Henry James, Sr., as at this time the James family was residing in England, and Emerson is known to have introduced James to Carlyle. Underneath this inscription is a 1926 ink notation by a later owner on how the book came to be acquired. Mudie found little success as a publisher or bookseller, but hit a grand slam with his lending library.
