London: John W. Parker and Son,, [1851]. First edition of the author's first book, the publication of which he funded himself. Though he later disowned the work, it was praised at the time by both Tennyson and Charles Kingsley. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, covers panelled in blind. Housed in a custom brown morocco pull-off box, spine lettered in gilt with gilt butterfly and floral motifs to compartments. Errata slip, which Forman notes as sometimes absent, is here present at rear. Faint residue of label to front endpapers. Spine very lightly sunned, pages faintly toned, yet still a fine copy.
