"Rewi Alley (1897-1987) was a significant figure in the history of New Zealand and China relations. He was born in New Zealand, but spent much of his life in China, where he worked as a writer, educator, political activist, and social reformer. Alley moved to China in 1927 and lived there until his death in 1987. During that time, he devoted himself to the Chinese industrial cooperative movement and played a major role in supporting China's resistance against Japanese invasion during the Second World War. He established the Shandan Bailie School in Gansu Province, which focused on vocational and agricultural education. Alley wrote over 60 books in English on a range of topics, including Chinese history, politics, and poetry. His experiences in China and his work in promoting understanding and cooperation between China and the West made him a significant figure in the history of international relations. Rewi Alley became a friend and confidant to generations of Chinese leaders, including Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping. He was one of the few Westerners to be honored by the Chinese government for his contributions to the Chinese people, and his legacy continues to play a significant role in New Zealand and China's diplomatic relations." / Chinese poetry.
