London: for W. Simpkin and R. Marshall, and J. and J. Jackson, 1827. His first book of poems First edition, small paper issue, of Tennyson's first book of poems, published anonymously. Despite the title, there were in fact three brothers involved, as the volume included poems by his brothers, Charles and Frederick. The Jacksons paid the authors 20 pounds for the copyright, a surprisingly large sum for unknown authors, obviously convinced of its merit. The work was issued simultaneously in large paper for 7s and small paper for 5s. A scarce work, especially in such an attractive contemporary binding. Octavo (159 x 93 mm). Contemporary russia, green morocco label, spine gilt to compartments, covers panelled in gilt and blind with gilt foliate border, marbled endpapers. Housed in a custom brown cloth and calf slipcase. Discreetly refurbished, with lifted head of spine glued down, sticker residue to front cover and other scuff marks removed, colour enhanced. Title page a little toned, but thereafter contents clean, with one gathering standing slightly proud, and faint stamp residue to title page and p.17. A very good copy. Ashley VII, 102; Sterling 912; Tinker 2058; Wise, Tennyson, 1; Thomson 1.
