Foxing affecting some of the pages, heavy to end papers. 46 illustrations/engravings by Foster, Clayton and Humphreys with further ornamentation to the text by Humphreys and H N Woods.

Boards are clean and only lightly rubbed. Neat ink inscription to half-title - dated 1870. Otherwise clean inside. 256 pages, with b/w illustrations. 210 x 155 mm (8¼ x 6 inches).

Grant & Son, Edin.” Beveled edges, decorative gilt line paneled boards, raised banding and decorations to spine. Marbled endpapers and full gilt page edges. In very good condition. Some rubbing to corners and ends of spine. A couple of small bumps and minor scratch to bottom of front board. Bookplate to front endpaper “Alfred Gathorne Hardy.” Binders stamp to rear endpaper. One or two minor handling marks else pages all very clean and tight throughout. Else a very good clean and tight copy. 256pp. Illustrations designed by Birket Foster, John Clayton & H.N. Humphreys, Engraved by Edmund Evans, Dalziel Brothers & others. With Ornamentation by H.N. Humphreys and engraved by H.N. Woods.
