Percy Bysshe Shelley was a 19th-century English poet who is, unfortunately, best-known through the fame gained by his wife Mary Shelley, author of 'Frankenstein'. Mary Shelley edited his poetical works, which was first published in 1839, and included copious notes. According to St. Clair,

"Mary Shelley brought [Percy] Shelley into the mainstream of the national culture…The notes that Mary added are masterpieces of editing, adding so immeasurably to the reader's understanding that nobody would now consider printing Shelley's poems without them."

This 1876 edition was edited by Harry Buxton Forman who in Professor Dowden's words was, 'our chief living authority on all that relates to Shelley's writings.'
