London: E. Moxon, Son & Co.. Fine Binding. Near Fine/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Illustrated by Thomas Seccombe. Not dated but gift inscription on front endpaper is dated 1873. Size 7.5" x 4.75", 420 pages. Red leather and gilt fine binding. Condition near fine, corners and spine edges slightly rubbed, spine slightly faded, a few spots to endpapers else contents clean. Gift inscription on front endpaper dated 1873 and beneath pencil notes from a later family member dated 1936, from the library of Henry Yool, a bookplate loosely inserted with the Latin motto "Collegivm Exoniense In Academia Oxon". The front and back covers are decorated with a series of intricate and patterned gilt borders and inner corner pieces. Five gilded raised bands to the spine with gilt titles in the second and gilt borders scrolls and centrepieces in the other compartments. Gilt hatching to the cover edges and gilt flowers and leaves to the inner turn-ins, pages are edged with incredibly bright gilt, pale yellow pastedowns and endpapers and burgundy book mark ribbon. Illustrated by Thomas Seccombe. With frontispiece bust portrait, engraved title page with vignette illustration "How bitter she wept o'e the victim of War" with full page engravings and vignette head and tailpieces throughout. A beautiful book. With a critical memoir by William Michael Rossetti. Thomas Campbell 1777-1844. His complete poetical works, including his most famous works "Lord Ullin's Daughter", "Lochiel's warning" "Glenara", "The Pleasures of Hope", "Ye Mariners of England", "Hohenlinden", "The Battle of the Baltic" and "Gertrude of Wyoming".
